Travelling in Warsaw in -15° celcius – some tips

It is literally below freezing temperature. I have been to some cold places. I have never been to a place where when I took my gloves out for a split second, I suddenly can’t feel my hands. Under two layers of socks and my solid doc marteens, it felt like my toes were about to fall off, or have to be amputated or something, because it is too cold.

Serves me right to go to Poland in the middle of January. I was told by the shuttle driver that in lithuania it is -20°c. Brrr.☆ ̄(>。☆) aah I can’t feel my face. Eventhough it was freezing, the light was bright and the sky was blue, so I got pretty pictures. Obviously after each photo session, i can no longer feel my fingers.

At the first instance Warsaw, is a combination of block Eastern European houses plus modern buildings. It has plenty of interesting architecture high rises. Then you go to the ‘old town’, which for a european country ultimately is quite young, because they were almost demolished during the WW2, and had to be rebuilt after that. This part of town is very pretty.

Ok, I could only withstand 4 hours outside in Warsaw so far. Here are my tips:

    • don’t go in the winter, hahahaha
    • If you do go, wear proper ski jackets. I you can find one with a hood and that could cover most of your face.
    • Moisturise well, because the bitter chill, really does make your skin dry. My face is really sore despite the putting loads of moisturiser
    • Buy a 24 hour transport ticket, which is 15 zl which is about €3/£3. Or if you are there for a weekend buy the weekend 24zl ticket. Very cheap tickets. This allow you to go on bus, tram, metro and train. This is available at the airport or there are sideroad shops.
    • The transportation is really good, and very frequent. So use it.
    • If you are buying it from sideroad shops, remember the word for the tickets “bileti dobowy normalny”
    • If you go in the winter, plan your journeys so you don’t have to be outside for very long. Use this very good website www.ztm.waw.pl
    • or get the transport map from the tourist information centre
    • Get a map so you don’t wander around in that temperature
    • Spend time in a museum, to avoid the outside, there are plenty of them in Warsaw. Remember that the museums are closed on a Monday

All of this is just for me, maybe because I’m not built for cold. Maybe you all can take the cold as you are braver. Have you traveled to somewhere where the temperature is below -10c, what would be your tip to survive the weather?

Since quite a few of you are Indonesian, I thought. i might try writing in Indonesian. Please be nice, My Indonesian is dreadful.

———————————-In Indonesian—————–

Suku paling dingin paling cuman minus 10. Buka sarung tangan kira-kira 1/2 menit tangan langsung beku.

  • Jangan pergi waktu musim dingin.. hahahaha
  • Jangan lupa pake pelembab, soalnya dinginnya kering.

Food – Makanan

I went to a tiny restaurant in the square in old town, and ordered three traditional Polish dish. Beetroot soup, peirogi ( dumplings), and beef with sauer kraut. They all taste yummy. I love peirogi the most.

Barszcz with UszkaDi sebuah restosangat kecil di alun alun kota tua, gue pesen 3 hidangan tradisional dari Polandia. Sup bit, peirogi (semacam pangsit tapi besar), dan daging sapi dimasak dengan kol asam alias sauer kraut. Semuanya enak, tapi gue paling suka pangsit polandia, hihihi, dalemnya kayak keju krim gitu.

Makasih.
