Martha Puri Natasande – Ideku Handmade – Cool Indonesian
As I mentioned before, I found a lot of Indonesian talents on instagram, now this next lady is not only a talented illustrator, but also a gifted crafter and businesswoman. She design, draws, sew teach and make. Simply amazing lady. I couldn’t believe it when she started to follow me on Instagram and that she was willing to answer my questions. She is so nice! Nothing short of being kind and approachable. Her name is Martha Puri Natasande, or Puri, her business is called Ideku Handmade (roughly translated: My handmade ideas). My Indonesian readers would most likely to know her better than I do, as she has been on tv, magazine, blogs, she is pretty famous (hence my surprise of her saying ok to my interview). She started because one of her cousins pushed her to have a blog, took pictures of the things she made to give to friends and family. I love the way she developed different things, and made them her own. One of the most popular items she does is the owl cushions. But I love the things with her illustration on it the most, they are personalised, simple, cute and colourful. Anyway here is the tiny Q&A. The indonesian version will follow below.
Who is your favourite illustrator and why them?
Diela Maharanie. I love the way she combines colours. It doesn’t seems to have any rhyme or reason but the end result is brilliant! Diela loves to splash colour together just like that. The way she imagines things is also really cool. It seems that whatever it is that is in her brain can come out and become an interesting and beautiful illustration. (I totally agree with her, Diela’s work are really cool! Have a look at her instagram account, you will definitely drool over her work)
Can you tell us your creative process from idea to item?
I always sketch my ideas on a piece of paper. Then from the sketch I make a pattern, then from that I will make it on a piece of fabric. After that then I will draw it on using a special fabric marker pen.
You make cushions, photoshoot props, clothing and even run craft workshop, but what things do you love making the most and why?
At the moment I love making birthday goody bags for children. Because when I am making them I can imagine the birthday boy/girl’s happiness of celebrating their birthday with their friends. Then I also imagine their friends reaction when receiving these bags, picturing their joy when they receive the items I made.
Also I hope that anything I made will make anyone who receive it smile. As simple as that.
If there is one advice you can give people who aspire to create like you, what would it be?
Whatever it is you do, do it with passion.
Because the most important thing is to maintain what you have created, you need to make/ be sure that what you are doing is trully what you love doing.
So what is your next plan?
My next plan… mmm not much. I want to start a family whilst doing what I am doing now. I want my business to grow and be better. I also want to run more workshop so I can inspire more people to be brave enough to start their own business. I have no doubt that she can do all this.
Ada illustrator favorit gak, siapa dan kenapa?
Diela Maharanie. Aku suka cara dia menggabungkan warna.
Lalu kain tinggal dijahit deh.
Kamu bikin bantal, bikin props, bikin baju, dsb, bahkan ngajar orang untuk buat2 tapi hal apa yang kamu paling suka/enjoy making, dan kenapa?
Sekarang paling suka bikin goody bags.
Pekerjaan apapun baik, asal dilakukan sesuai passion.
Rencana selanjutnya… mmm.. ga muluk2 sih. Pengen punya keluarga sambil masih ngejalanin usaha ini. Hahhaa jd curhat yah?
