Dita & Zulfy – Cemprut & Uhkz – Cool Indonesians

One of the things I love to look for going to urban areas are the Murals or what some may say grafitti. I don’t think I have actually seen good ones in Jakarta until I saw UHKZ work. Very original and cool. Then one day he put up on Instagram that Cemprut had made a plushi out of his artwork.

Mural and Plushie

I thought this is so cool, such a different idea, turning a mural to a plushie? and obviously it is a collaborative work. Brilliant! So I contact them on Instagram for a joint interview. They said yes. They are really sweet and kind🙂

As usual Indonesian Version – to follow on the bottom. Here goes:

How did you meet ? and Why?

Zulfy (Z): It was un-intentional I was looking at Google and saw Dita’s posing in front one of my mural. And when I clicked on the picture it went through her blog. It turns out she is one of the cool Indonesian Indie-crafter who happens to life nearby in Tangerang. Note: Tangerang is a part of Jakarta. So I contacted her on Facebook, then we met up regularly at PAMUMINGSOLAM.

Dita (D): When I was feeling bored living in Tangerang I was introduced to PAMUNMINGSOLAM by Zulfy on Facebook. The gathering where indie-crafters sell their work, meet, share ideas and collaborate really warms me up and inspired to work.

Note: Pasar Muda Minggu Sore Sampai Malam – Sunday afternoon till late Market for young people – I am not sure about this translation.🙂 This Market sounds cool right?

Z: At the start I wanted to ask her to make the Plushie but she wasn’t taking any orders. As she is Indie. But then I was happy when she asked me to collaborate with her.

D: I thought that because the range of variety of craft in the market are so different it would be cool to collaborate. At the gathering they do collaborations between Poetry & Beat Box, Music & Theatre, Recycle and Music, it was then the right time for Grafitti and Craft!

Is there any favourite artist Zulfy or Dita, any favourite crafter and why?

Z: My favourite illustrators are katherine karnadi, STRNGRRR and Yunita eksa. There are a lot of street artists that I like such as osgemeos, obey, darbotz, koma, streoflow, the yellow dino, eko nugroho and many more. Because I just love their work.

D: My Mum! For me she is holistic, she works as a midwife but her other abilities and skills is the subject of my envy. She is so crafty that she participates in lots of competition, she is great at cooking, singing, gardening etc. She beats Martha Stewart hands down.🙂

Can you tell me your creative process, what makes you work, where you get the ideas and how do you make it to live?

Z: I sketch things on paper, then I edit or colour them in on photoshop, but I prefer to work manually than using digital. I love drawing. My ideas come from wanting to make something that is different.

D: The ideas can come from wherever, from a dream or from sitting around the garden playing guitar (check out her singing on this youtube video). Usually my ideas come from a story. I imagine the story line, then pop, pop, pop comes the character out, one by one. I sketch them out from imagination, try out some pattern then starts the most fun of the process: Trial by Error! I prefer to make everything from scratch, from unidentifiable things, maybe even from things that maybe I think it is impossible to be done; trying out new things I don’t know how to make yet.

I try again and again until my heart say: YES this is it!!

What makes you happy or proud about the your work?

Z: When I see people smile, liking and appreciating my drawing, is basically what makes me proud.

D: The ability to produce craft following my heart.

When I was working to people’s order, not only the terrible deadlines I have to make but having to go against my heart changing work because the customer thinks they are not good enough. So I decided not to make myself depressed, and just do what I want to do, and tried uploading on Social Media what I made calling them Being Born after my work has been born then people can buy them by adopting them. Now this process is what people are waiting for online.

Any advice you can give to those who wants to start their own collaboration?

D: WHEREVER YOU GO, GO WITH ALL YOUR HEART

This is my motto for my craft, that can be used in collaboration. Choose a partner that your heart also like. Consider the difference in the type of work as a great and fun challenge of creating something together.🙂

Z: Come, lets all collaborate with your good friends. It doesn’t need to be the same type of work, something good could come out from the collaboration.

One last question, what do you like being a creative that lives in Indonesia?

Z: To be considered different. We are all different but one, Indonesians

D: There are plenty simple ideas and passion to creatively work. The beautiful natural world of Indonesia, and warm friends who loves to share.

INDONESIAN VERSION

Bagaimanakah awalnya kalian bertemu? Apa yang memicu kolaborasi kalian?

Zulfy (Z): Awalnya si ga sengaja lagi buka mbah google ehh liat foto mba dita yg sedang berfoto ria disamping gambar lawasku.

Kalau street artist idola osgemeos, obey, darbotz, koma, streoflow, the yellow dino, eko nugroho dan masih banyak si sebenernya.

D:

Umi aku !

Mama aku sendiri.

UHKZ mural Jakarta Indonesia

Z:

Disaat melihat orang lain tersenyum

Cemprutz Dragon

Kayak bertentangan gitu sama hati, jadi ngapain dipaksain kan?

D:

WHEREVER YOU GO, GO WITH ALL YOUR HEART.

Z: Di anggep berbeda..Padahal kan walaupun berbeda kita tetep satu jua itulah indonesia😀
